  3. Forms: Lectures and group discussions. The course will be conducted in English.
  4. Level: 4th year - day students
  5. Purpose: 
    • develop a deeper understanding of methods and methodological issues in library development and research
  6. Results
    • theoretical understanding of different methods
    • practical experience with different methods
    • awareness of methodological issues: the relevance, applicability, strengths and weaknesses of different methods
    • ability to select and use appropriate methods in library development and research

7. Content 

7.1. Lecture on Quality indicators in library management. HTML

7.2. Workshop

  • a set of (simplified) empirical cases will be prepared in advance
  • groups of students will be assigned a case each 
  • the group will spend app. one hour analysing the case
7.3. Plenary discussion
  • the groups will present their analyses in the plenary - with a guided discussion
7.4. Lecture on Citation analysis and library and information science. HTML

7.5. Workshop

  • a summary of White and McCain (1998), together with a set of questions, will be prepared in advance
  • groups students will discuss the questions
7.6. Lecture on Bibliometrics and the study of scientific communities. HTML

7.7. Lecture (60 min.) on Cultural statistics as a research tool. HTML

7.8. Workshop

  • a set of empirical cases of cultural statistics will be prepared in advance
  • groups of students will be assigned a case each 
  • the group will spend app. one hour analysing the case
  • the groups will present their analyses in the plenary - with a guided discussion
7.9. Lecture on Library scenarios in strategic planning. HTML

7.10. Workshop

  • a set of different conditions for scenarios (type of library, number of years ahead) will be prepared in advance
  • groups of students will develop one scenario case each
  • the groups will present their findings at a poster session
