Building blocks for an International teaching module in Oslo

With illustrations of possible topics

  1. Standard courses in English
    • Digital documents
    • International literature ("Oversatt skjønnlitteratur")
  2. Third year theses in English (Spanish, Russian, ...)
    • Comparative study of library education
    • Planning a new metropolitan library
  3. Trainee period + supervised paper
    • At one of the OUC learing centres
    • At Ask public library
  4. Intensive course (3-5 days) + supervised paper/project
    • Library web site management
    • Multiethnic librarianship
  5. Work on conference staff + supervised paper
    • BOBCATSSS
    1. IFLA 2005
  6. Bilingual courses (using Norwegian and English at the same time)
    1. Reference management
    2. Freedom of information
  7. Courses in English from other faculties

Papers and projects can be done individually, but also collectively - in mixed groups (Norwegian/ non-Norwegian)

Joint supervision of projects/papers is another interesting approach

Build on established relationships

It seems reasonable to link international exchange to events that are sure to continue on a regular basis in the future:

  1. The annual BOBCATSSS conferences that are arranged by European library students, with the support of library schools and EUCLID. See BOBCATSSS
  2. The annual IFLA conferences
  3. The annual tours (1 week) abroad for third year students, with a teacher as guide: Hungary, Egypt, Russia, ....

The BOBCATSSS network currently includes 18 library schools in 16 European countries.

Since the IFLA conference 2005 will be held in Oslo, Norwegian librarians will be deeply engaged in international work during the next two years.

Ongoing international activities

  1. Oslo students that
    • study abroad for a limited period
    • work as trainees abroad
    • write their final (third year) theses on international topics
  2. Foreign students that
    • study in Oslo for a limited period
    • work as trainees in Oslo / Norway
  3. JBI staff members that
    • conduct courses in English for foreign students (digital documents)
    • take their doctorates abroad: Finland, Denmark
    • go abroad for advanced studies or research: United States, Great Britain
    • go abroad and teach for longer periods: Poland
    • go abroad and give one or two lectures: France
    • participate in professional courses or conferences abroad: IFLA, ...
    • publish articles in international journals
  4. Visiting scholars that
    • stay at JBI for longer periods (weeks, months): USA, Finland, ...
    • visit JBI for a couple of days and give one or two lectures: USA, Poland, ...
