April 26. Bätzing`s book on the cultural geography of the Alps was a revelation. It combines text and photos in such a way that you learn to interpret the landscape - and escape the mythical pictures of unspoiled Alpine nature. Up to the highest levels of vegetation, the landscape has been shaped by human cultivation - building walls, grazing animals, mowing grass.

May 22. German scholars are known for their diligence. A single entry from the marvellous historical dictionary Geschichtliche Grundbegriffe - the article dealing with Volk, Nation, Nationalismus, Masse - spans 290 pages. It provides an outstanding tour through European and German history - seen through the lens of these particular concepts.
