How much of the written culture of Greece and Rome has actually been lost?

In the project I want to compare the set of classical authors that are available and appreciated today - with the authors that were read and discussed by the educated elite in the late Hellenistic world and in the Early Roman Empire.

Extensive data collection is not called for. The authors that are current today can easily be mustered - from publication lists and handbooks of classical literature. The Greek and Latin canons of the past can be reconstructed from the larger histories of Greek and Latin literature.

The main intellectual task lies in combining and presenting this material in useful and enlightening ways. A mechanical computation of statistical tables will not do. The authors and their works must be evaluated and placed in context - both in the society of today and in the social worlds of Hellenistic and Roman times.

The project will include both fictional and factual literature. The sharp distinction between technical and artistic writing was, in any case, foreign to the classical world. Philosophy, history, mathematics, and medicine are important parts of the antique legacy. More ...

Hvor mye av den antikke skriftkulturen har egentlig gått tapt?

Prosjektet tar sikte på å analysere hvor mye av den sentrale skriftlige kulturen på gresk og latin som er tilgjengelig og levende i dag.

Dette er en problemstilling som krever en kombinasjon av - nokså enkle - kvantitative opptellinger og en mer krevende kvalitativ vurdering av de bevarte forfatternes kulturelle betydning. Det er ikke verkene som sådan, men deres virkningskraft som teller. Prosjektet må altså integrere empirisk statistikk med resepsjonsanalyse og kulturell tolkning.

Jeg tenker meg en rimelig enkel analyse, som rent empirisk tar utgangspunkt i håndbøker og sekundærlitteratur. Når det gjelder dagens forhold til verkene, tenker jeg å bygge på opplysninger om utgivelser - spesielt i de store klassikerseriene (Loeb, Budé, Teubner) og (kanskje senere) utlån fra bibliotek.

Et første formidlingsoppdrag knyttet til antikken var et kort NRK-intervju i forbindelse med åpningen av det nye Bibliotheca Alexandrina høsten 2002. I den anledning skrev jeg også et lite notat om biblioteket i Alexandria.
