Rune Ottosen (1950) graduated in journalism in 1973 (Norwegian College of Journalism) and in Political Science in 1984 (University of Oslo). He has worked for many years as a journalist in various Norwegian media. From 1984-89 he was engaged as a lecturer and research fellow at the Norwegian College of Journalism. From 1989 -1993 he worked as Information Director and Research Fellow at the International Peace Research Institute, Oslo (PRIO) where he was in charge of the research project "Enemy Images in Norwegian Media Since the Thaw in East-West Relations". From 1994-1996 he worked as a research fellow at the Norwegian Journalist Federation writing the professional history of Norwegian journalists. Since 1996 he has worked as associate professor at the Journalist education, Oslo College and became professor in the same institution in July 1999. In the periode 2000-2003 he had a part time position as professor in journalism at The Sami College in Kautokeino.

Rune Ottosen has together with professor Stig Arne Nohrstedt edited a comparative international study of the Gulf Conflict coverage in several countries. The volume is  titled "Journalism and the New World Order. Gulf War, National News Discourse and Globalization". Together with Stig A. Nohrstedet he in 2004 published U.S. and the others. Global Media Images on “The War on Terror” and in 2005 they published “Global War – Local Views. Media Images of the Iraq War”.

Rune Ottosen is deputy leader in the Norwegian Association of Press-and Media History and was president of  The Norwegian Non-fiction Writers and Translator Association 2001-2005. He is also a member of TRANSCEND - a Peace and Development Network and is involved in a group working with Peace journalism in Toda Institute.

He has been invited as guest lecturer to a number of Universities in Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Belgium, Estonia, USA and South Africa, Nepal and  Pakistan.
