PhD project “Commodification of space and culture. A study of the search for creative buzz by urban redevelopment strategies in European cities”
The thesis research sets out to investigate the use and consequences of spatial and cultural strategies in European metropolitan policy and planning. The investigation will be carried out through a comparative case study of the waterfront developments of Oslo and Marseille. The choice of this topic is based on the observation of the extent to which cities are seduced by cultural consumption strategies when restructuring their cities from the industrial base. In the postindustrial era, spatial strategies such as the redevelopment of ports and industrial waterside areas into multifunctional waterfronts are included in most cities’ plans and initiatives for securing and/ or obtaining economic growth. The inter-urban competition thesis, which is linked to global processes, has come to legitimize the necessity of extensive urban restructuring. The following questions underlie the project: Do urban governments use the same strategies, and are waterfronts homogeneously developed as exclusive “packaged landscapes/ success zones”? What social implications are involved in these development projects? Waterfront developments are culture-intensive. The focus of my project is therefore on the commodification of space and culture through waterfront developments.
