A Short Introduction:
I am teaching Religion & Ethics
to the students of the Degree Programme in Early
Childhood Education (ECE) within the Faculty of Education
at Oslo University College
(OUC). OUC offers more than 20 professional study programmes, and
focuses on uniting high theoretical skills with closeness to each
professional field. Our programme is one of these. OUC has more than
11.000 students, of which 2.800 study at the Faculty of Education. The
two study progammes, ECE and Teacher Programme (for Primary school
teachers) divide the students evenly, about 1.400 each. At ECE we have
a teaching staff of about 90. My subject of teaching, Religion &
Ethics, is one of severaø compulsory subjects in the first year
of study. We are 3 fulltime teachers covering the field. Our course has
three main areas of focus: Religion (general concepts, psychology of
religion, and special focus on Islam), Christian belief and tradition
(with special focus on the festivals and cultural heritage), and Ethics
(basic as well as professional ethics). In all three areas, the
practical aspects of relating these values in a Pre-school setting, are
given due consideration.
My own
background is quite varied. I have been engaged in Teacher
programmes since 1992. Previous to that, I was in church work, partly
as minister, partly as seminary teacher, and partly as administrator of
various fields of church-related activities, including some years as
principal of a language institute for foreign missionaries in Kobe,
Japan. Japan has
been my place of work for about 15 years. I did my professional studies
in theology mainly in Oslo, Norway, with additional graduate studies in
the US, at Concordia Seminary in St.Louis, as well as periods of study
in Cambridge and Jerusalem. This being my background, I am much
concerned with issues relating to the cross-cultural field. Norway is
gradually becoming a multi-cultural society, especially in larger urban
areas, where schools and pre-schools no longer have a homogenous
cultural group of children. This is a challenging aspect of both our
subject, as well as the education as a whole. My main focus of interest
at the present is therefore: How to relate
values in a multi-cultural society?
On a personal level, I am much concerned with the issues related to the
socalled "Homecoming Immigrants" ("Hjemigranter"), with special focus
on the children who have grown up abroad and come back to their
"home-country", also called "Third Culture
Kids"(TCK).
These issues are treated more extensively in publications from the NORUT organization.
