WHAT DOES THE WORD MEAN??

The translations are not always accurate, but should be close enough in most cases.  Many farmnames are one person's name + a noun, like 'Maristuen' = 'Mari' + 'stuen' = 'Mari's cabin' (or cottage).  'Finnepladsen' = 'Finne' + 'plads' (plass) = 'The Finn's place' (or cottage).  Many farm names include 'braate(n)' which means 'burned clearing in the forest'.    This tells us that big parts of the Ådalen valley were cleared by fire.

Pronunciation:   aa, å, Å = like 'au' in 'Paul';   ø,Ø = like 'ea' in 'learn';   æ,Æ = like 'a' in 'and', sometimes like 'e' in 'end'.
